We Had a great successful 2014 kitexpo with wind: All three days– Sunday was the strongest!
The 2014 Pismo Beach KiteXpo kicked off today with 17 brands setting up flags and tents on a calm and sunny Central California morning. As the offshore layer of fog began retreating, a gentle breeze kicked in and built throughout the morning. The KiteXpo started with attendees gathering in the Ben Wilson Surf tent for an in depth surf clinic by Ben Wilson. After a couple of hours of discussion and informal Q&A the first of the large kites hit the water.

The wind built steadily through the afternoon until the water was full of kiters trying out the latest kite equipment. New releases such as Liquid Force’s Solo, Nobile’s Infinity Splitboard and RRD’s strutless kites were being put through their lightwind paces in the early afternoon’s 12-15 knot breeze.
Trevor Robbins commits to a backside air on Airush demo gear.
The wind continued to build to an estimated 15-19 knots in the late evening as event organizer Marina Chang raffled off a Cabrinha Wakeskate and a Litewave Dave twin tip to two lucky winners. Tonight’s party was held at Et Voila, in San Luis Obispo with wines generously donated by Tudor Wines. The fundraiser / Birthday bash was thrown in honor of Kinsley ThomasWong with every attendee getting a raffle ticket for the chance to win three nights at a luxury condo in Mammoth for a value of $825!

Day two at the Pismo Beach KiteXpo started out slow with a deep layer of fog blanketing the beach well into mid-day. But similar to Friday, the early afternoon sun drew in a mild sea breeze which ramped up in the late afternoon for a couple hours of prime time demo conditions.
The mellow start was perfect for SUP demos with F-One, Slingshot, Naish and RRD sending SUPers of all skill levels out into the glassy event site surf. With soft mushy lefts and rights, the conditions were perfect for learning some new skills or trying out the latest shapes.
The first clinic of the day was the Kiter Safety clinic in which Kirk Talon walked a group of kiters through the tools and techniques that are crucial for caring for kiteboarders who have suffered an injury. Kirk shared a number of important concepts for minimizing injuries during emergency response situations.
With the sun barely peeking through the fog, the crowd headed over to the next clinic of the day with Ben Wilson Surf. Here the growing group of 50+ participants heard about all aspects of surfing with a kite from equipment choices, overall strategy and basic wave safety from Ben Wilson himself.
As the clinics wrapped up, a gentle breeze filled and the biggest kites hit the sky. A slight uptick in the wind allowed a few foil-boarders to get out on the water, while others attempted to get a feel for flying the the latest kites from the beach.
Participants flocked to the late afternoon raffle to collect some of the kites, boards and apparel donated by participating brands. Greg Gnecco from LIQUID FORCE gave away a 138 Focus kiteboard to Jeff Stokes, a power kiter from the valley who just moved to Oceano a few weeks ago, while a 12m EPIC Screamer was raffled off to San Diego kiter Marko Bartscherer. Kirk Talon scored a Loyd 5’8 RIPPA surfboard.
When Marco Bini heard his raffle ticket called he ran from 300 yards away. The look on his face was priceless when he discovered that Ben Wilson was handing over a BWSurf Noise kite in the size of Marco’s choice.
The evening wrapped up with a beach bonfire and a showing of the documentary With a Kite. The forecast for Sunday is looking stronger than all days combined with solid 9m wind in store for the 17 brands demoing their 2014 gear. There will be another safety clinic Sunday morning and with plenty of raffle items remaining, Sunday is sure to be the best day yet.
The final day of the Pismo Beach KiteXpo was blessed with blue skies and wind, a great finale to three days of clinics, raffles, parties and demos for the 12th annual event.
The day started off with a final “How to Help an Injured Kiter” presentation by Kirk Talon at 10:30a, followed by a “Shove It” clinic sponsored by Litewave Dave. Attendees then converged on registration for the final raffle at noon, right before the wind line hit the beach.

Traveling all the way from Poland to demo at KiteXpo, Gosia Rosiak-Brawanska gave away the grand prize of Sunday’s raffle, a 10m Nobile Kiteboarding Fifty/50 kite to Southern California kiter Dave Boston. Local central coast rider Alli Pareti was beyond stoked when she won the Best Armada board presented by Rich Sabo from the Gorge. Attendees then took to the water to demo gear and enjoyed 9-12m conditions until sunset.
Nobile’s Gosia Rosiak-Brawanska hands a shiny new 10m to a lucky Dave Boston.
Over $14,000 in gear, accessories and trips was donated by 17 participating companies including Airush, AXIS Kiteboarding, Ben Wilson Surf, Best, Cabrinha, Dakine, F.One, HQ Kites USA, Litewave Designs, Liquid Force, Loyd Surfboards, Mystic, Naish, Nobile, North, RRD, SAKOS Waterwear Apparel and Slingshot. Between the winemaker dinner sponsored by local kiter Dan Tudor of www.tudorwines.com on Friday night, the Sat evening BBQ hosted by Maui Mike and the Lujan family, and the daily raffles, the event raised $11,187.78 for the ThomasWong family to help event founder, Kinsley ThomasWong, in his ongoing recovery efforts.

Thank you to all the vendors for their support, the volunteers who helped out with the event and the riders who came from all over to partake in the festivities and demos. The 2015 Pismo KiteXpo will be April 10-12 with more clinics planned including surf and freestyle. For more information on Kinsley’s ongoing recovery efforts, see www.friendsofkinsley.com
